CiNCA’s 10th Annual Celebration is a fun event for a great cause

Sweetwater and Newland are proud to be a sponsor of the 10th Annual Celebration of Children in Nature, taking place Friday. Sept. 29 at the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Austin.

Proceeds from this event benefit the Children in Nature Collaborative of Austin, whose mission is to spearhead a regional movement to reconnect kids to the wonder and joy of the natural world and to inspire the next generation of environmental stewards.

The highlight of the Sept. 29 event is an awards winner that will recognize those in the community who have focused on getting kids out into nature. Evan Smith, co-founder and CEO of the nonprofit, nonpartisan Texas Tribune news organization, will be master of ceremonies.

The 2017 award winners represent innovative and successful initiatives to get kids out into nature more often in Central Texas. Through their efforts, they are helping to reduce the symptoms of “nature deficit disorder” – a term coined by bestselling author Richard Louv in his influential book, “Last Child in the Woods.”

This year’s winners include Keep Austin Beautiful, Science Mill founder Bonnie Baskin, the City of Austin’s Cities Connecting Children in Nature program, and Texas Children in Nature coordinator Jennifer Bristol.

The event will also include a live auction offering nature-themed trips, experiences and artworks.

Last year, Sweetwater began a partnership with CiNCA to develop programs and activities to encourage Sweetwater families to spend more time outdoors, both in the community and at nearby Hill Country resources such as the Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center.

One of the most recent CiNCA activities for Sweetwater residents was an insect collecting event, featuring a hike along the community’s trails with an entomologist.
