Explore Our Trails: Maidenhair Trail
In this blog series, we’ll take a look at each of the 5 trails that make up Sweetwater’s trail system, which extends for approximately 10 miles.
One of Sweetwater’s most popular trails is Maidenhair Trail, which meanders for roughly one mile and is rated moderately easy for residents of all ages and abilities.
Accessible via trailheads near Osceola Trail and Pedernales Summit Parkway, Maidenhair Trail is named for the Maidenhair ferns that flourish along its route. The ferns may look delicate, but this native species is actually quite hardy and easy to grow under the right conditions, especially with the moisture provided by the creek.
Maidenhair Trail is home to some of Sweetwater’s most beautiful natural treasures, including a natural waterfall and a hidden grotto. The trail passes by an ancient Texas Madrone tree estimated to be 800 years old.
The trail opens up for views of wildflower meadows and an old windmill that has been preserved from the land’s history as a working ranch. It also treats users to one of the highest lookout points in Sweetwater.
Maidenhair Trail connects with Canyon Trail, a 1.19-mile trail that’s one of Sweetwater’s more challenging hikes, but rewards users with awesome views and natural features.
