Fun things to do from Sweetwater’s community partners
Looking for something to do? Everyone in the family will love an activity that focuses on nature, and they’ll be healthier and more aware of our natural surroundings in the bargain. From stargazing to puppy yoga, check out these upcoming and ongoing events from the community-based organizations that Sweetwater has partnered with. When you choose an activity from these great organizations, you’ll be joining us in supporting their worthy missions.
Nature play at the Wildflower Center. The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, Sweetwater’s partner in nurturing acres of wildflowers throughout the community, offers many classes and programs for kids who love to learn about nature and the outdoors. Their environmental education programs include formal classes, summer camps and informal “nature play” programs. Check out their youth program calendar for details on programs such as Milkweed Madness, Writing From a Bug’s-eye View, and Native Plants to Dye For. Summer programs include Camp Wildflower and weekly Nature Nights with themes such as Arachnids & Insects; Life on the Prairie; and Geology, Fossils & Caves.
Sweet adventures with honey. Round Rock Honey is Sweetwater’s partner in maintaining six honeybee hives throughout the community. You can learn more about bees and honey with tours of their honey factory in Round Rock on most Saturdays. This one-hour tour begins with an introduction to the importance of bees and bee culture, explores their harvesting methods and in-house bottling process, and concludes with a honey tasting. You can even try on a bee suit, and shop for honey and other bee products. Tickets are $20 for adults 18 and over, and free for children 17 and under.
Fun with the animals. Our partner Austin Pets Alive! is a pioneer in innovative lifesaving programs designed to save animals most at risk of euthanasia. Their signature third-party events are a lot of fun, and are a key component of their fundraising efforts. There’s always something interesting to choose from their event calendar, such as Puppy Yoga, Round Rock Express Pints & Pups Night, and happy hours at popular local bars. An ongoing monthly event is Third Sundays at APA! Thrift. This fun shopping experience at their North Austin thrift store always includes new vendors, live music, foster dog appearances, and more. Mark your calendar for September 13, when APA! will host a huge No Kill Anniversary Celebration, marking Austin’s 7th year as the nation’s largest No Kill City.
The sky’s the limit. Children in Nature Collaborative of Austin, or CiNCA, is our partner in offering nature-focused programs that help residents of all ages explore and enjoy Sweetwater’s parks and trails. CiNCA also offers an active calendar of events at its Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center near Sweetwater. Their offerings include Star Parties, Spring Bird Walks, Nature Photography Workshops, Birds & Brew, and Guided Weekend Canyon Tours. Everyone in the family will enjoy the benefits of being outdoors.
