Storage, energy efficiency top list of what home buyers want in 2019

Today’s homebuyers want laundry rooms, walk-in pantries, hardwood floors, and energy-saving features such as windows and appliances, according to a survey of nearly 4,000 homebuyers by the National Association of Home Builders.

To find out what buyers want, the NAHB asked people who had recently purchased a new home or planned to buy one within the next three years to rank 175 features, based on how essential they saw them to their home-purchasing decision.

Among the top 10 features were home storage spaces, such as oversized laundry rooms with built-in cabinets, kitchens with island storage and walk-in pantries, and garage storage.

Energy-saving technologies were another priority, with homebuyers expressing a strong desire for Energy Star appliances and energy efficient windows.

The most-desired features also included hardwood flooring, outdoor living areas and exterior lighting.

Kitchen and bath trends were another focus of the survey. An overwhelming majority of 86% of homebuyers wants their kitchen and dining areas to be completely or partially open. The most popular finishes include stainless steel appliances, preferred by 67% of respondents, along with granite or natural stone countertops (56%) and white-on-white color palettes (32%).

You can see many of these trends with video tours, virtual tours and photo galleries of our beautifully decorated model homes from our best-in-class homebuilders.

In terms of where to live, a strong majority of 64% still prefers the suburbs, followed by a rural area (24%) and the central city (11%). From getting more for your money, to living in a tight-knit community, see five reasons why suburban life beats city living.
